The Hort’s Story

Siblings Richard, Annie and Bessie Hort came from a long line of caterers, their mother and maternal grandmother had run eating houses, while their father, William Hort, had been Bristol’s chief rates collector. They grew up in the family business, the Exchange Dining Rooms in Wine Street – the most fashionable restaurant in Bristol, where the first cocktails ever to be mixed in the city are said to have been made here. The restaurant moved to its present Broad Street site (now, Hort’s Townhouse) in 1922 with signature dishes including oyster soup and Dover sole.

Do I need to book a table at Hort’s Townhouse?

Walk-ins are always welcome, whether you’re popping in for a pint, a bite to eat or a few drinks. If you’re planning to dine with us, joining us for Sunday lunch or visiting for a big sporting fixture, we recommend booking ahead.

Do you serve breakfast?

We certainly do. Breakfast is served from 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, with everything from a proper Full English to Eggs Benedict, lighter favourites and freshly brewed coffee. You don’t need to be staying with us to join us for breakfast either, walk-ins are very welcome.

Do you serve brunch at Hort’s Townhouse?

We do. Our Weekend Brunch Club runs every Saturday and Sunday from 11am – 3pm. Whether you’re catching up with friends, easing into the weekend or making a day of it in Bristol, settle in for brunch favourites, Bloody Marys and plenty more from the bar.

Do you serve Sunday roasts?

Absolutely. Sundays at Hort’s are all about proper pub roasts, with British meats, crispy roast potatoes, double-egg Yorkies and plenty of gravy. We recommend booking ahead for Sunday lunch.
